Who Speaks for Scotland? A People’s Team for Sovereignty, Not Parties
The People’s Team – A Proposal
As Scotland charts its path toward constitutional independence, a pressing question faces us all: who speaks with integrity for the people of Scotland—beyond party lines, beyond career politics?
We propose a People’s Team: a collective of respected voices—civic, cultural, constitutional—who can guide a public-led convention and speak with the moral and intellectual credibility this moment demands. These are not spokespeople of institutions; they are stewards of public trust.
🧭 The People’s Team – A Proposal
1. Legal and Constitutional Voices
To frame a legitimate and credible pathway to independence, we need leading constitutional minds who have consistently stood outside party agendas:
Professor Aileen McHarg – A widely respected scholar of constitutional and administrative law, known for her impartial insights and commitment to democratic integrity. She brings clarity where others bring rhetoric.
Dr. Elliot Bulmer – One of Scotland’s foremost experts in constitutional design, with a deep understanding of sovereignty, legitimacy, and the international standards that must underpin Scotland’s next steps. He offers scaffolding, not slogans.
2. Civic and Cultural Leaders
Scotland’s soul isn’t found in manifestos—it’s in the lived experiences, communities, and culture that persist beyond parliaments. These individuals amplify that voice:
Lesley Riddoch – A fierce advocate for local empowerment and community-led democracy. She has spent years listening to—and amplifying—the voices of everyday Scots.
Alastair McIntosh – A moral voice rooted in land, justice, and spiritual integrity. He brings ethical depth and a calm insistence on compassion as a national value.
Alan Bissett – An acclaimed writer and artist whose radical clarity and wit have cut through the noise of party spin for over a decade. He speaks with the language of the people—sharpened by principle.
3. Democratic Accountability – A Citizen Delegate
No matter how principled the expert, true sovereignty must include the people directly. That’s why we propose electing a citizen delegate through a transparent, grassroots-led process—such as a digitally verified People’s Assembly or National Convention.
This individual would carry a direct mandate to speak and act—not as a political candidate, but as a conduit of community consent and lived reality. Their voice, like every Scot’s, must be central—not symbolic.
🔧 What Would This Team Do?
Guide a People’s Convention, where a constitutional pathway is publicly debated, consented to, and articulated with clarity and legality.
Offer a non-party civic platform to assert Scotland’s sovereignty in ways that reflect our values—not just our aspirations.
Serve as a nucleus of trust: culturally resonant, intellectually robust, and democratically rooted.
⏳ Why Now?
We cannot wait for permission. And we cannot build the future on the back of party calculations. The time has come to platform people of integrity—those who carry public respect, not party discipline.
By selecting or endorsing this civic team through open consultation and digital verification, we move beyond rhetoric to real, grassroots legitimacy.
This proposal is not a final answer. It is a call to reflection, participation, and courage.
✍️ Tell Us What You Think
Would you support this team as the voice of a People’s Convention?
Would you help nominate a citizen delegate from your community?
Let’s start the conversation. Let’s build our future—with truth, transparency, and each other.
Your choice of individuals in strange to me. Lesley Riddoch supports only the SNP and not the greater YES movement as far as I can see, and Alan Bissett is busy with family and hasn't been around the YES movement for a long time. I have no objections to either beyond this though, but there are many, many others doing great things for the movement right now, such as Sara Salyers, Peter Bell, Jim Sillars, Jason Baird of the IndyApp, Barrhead Boy and all those on Through a Scottish Prism, there is Kenny MacAskill whose dedication to Independence can never be questioned, Neale Hanvey, Joanna Cherry, the AUOB team, Craig Murray, Alf Baird, Wings over Scotland and many more. All these are working hard to keep the movement alive, and yet you don't mention them. Everyone needs to work together, not "pro-SNP" or "anti-SNP" but everyone who truly cares for this country's future and is willing to applaud and encourage all the efforts of those pushing forward.
